Discovering Religion Part 2

So this week, I read about Druidism. It was interesting to contrast it to Buddhism. I feel even more drawn to Druidism, mostly because it deals with very modern issues, such as the environment and consumerism. The reason for this being that Druidism practised today is very new.

The original Druids of pre-Christian Britain have been long dead, and because they believed in teachings being passed on by word of mouth, many of these stories, songs, prays and teaching were lost. The only records we have of the Druids are the things Julius Caesar had written. During the first Druid revival period, which was during the Renaissance, many people searched for documents and became increasingly interested in Celtic lore and story. Iolo Morganwg, aka Edward Williams, wrote the Gorsedd, claiming it was the real Druid prays. After his death, it was revealed that the whole Gorsedd was fictional. For a while many neo-pagans used the Gorsedd as their kind of "scripters", but it eventually fell out of favour, because many people did not wish to practise based on fictional stories and prayer's. (My research was done from a book called What do Druids believe?) It's very free of dogma, and is open to all beliefs.

Anyway, druidism feels natural to me, as if it's something I already know and have always believed in. I want to learn more about natural healing and such. If I had done better in science in high school, maybe I could be going to university to study natural healing, herbalism and midwifery. I could always go back after I finish my design program. oh wow, thinking about it I have a lot of Celtic/Druidic hobbies that I want to get into. For one thing there's the harp. I've wanted to play the harp since i was 5. No kidding, I was it on Disney's Fantasia, and I wanted to learn so bad.

I've been very much influenced by my ancestors as well. I'm part native American (like 1/16, not that much) but I'm interested in their beliefs about nature and the spirit world. I don't know much and I'm trying to figure out were to go to learn about my ancestors.

Well, for know I am happy with my learning. I'm might pursue Wicca next. My grandmother is Wiccan, so there's a family connection.

To be continued...?
